My CD Smells Like Cotton Candy!

bigfatthanks

This note was supposedly from the Rolling Stone, but I have yet to find the article on the website.  I saw the picture from a tweet pointing to ICANHASINTERNETS and I agree with it.  As I have a bit of disposable money, I have started to purchase CDs to support the artist and to have something tangible other than digital replications of music.  I’ve also found that purchasing full CDs forces you to listen to the disc entirely, making the experience much better.  I remember when I was younger, I would purchase loads of singles or maxi-singles on CD and eventually buy the CD if the song was good.  I agree with the ICHI post in that if the RIAA had observed this behavior, the backlash from MP3 downloading would be a different story.  Oddly enough, the ICHI post cited Rolling Stone and led to an awesome Katy Perry article and photoshoot from a recent issue.

–Which leads me to the meat and potatoes of this article–

An amateur review of Katy Perry‘s Teenage Dream:

Good gosh, the two singles, “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream” have been blasting on the radio for weeks and I still listen to the whole song(s).  You can give me as much crap as you like about me listening to it but:

  1. The songs are infectious and fun and even my friend Allan (who hates the songs) sings them without realizing it
  2. Katy Perry is ridiculously hott (that’s with two T’s) and as funny as Russell Brand can be, I really hate his guts right now
  3. If it’s going to be playing on the radio continuously, instead of getting mad, have fun with it

Now, my buddies are giving me a hard time because me buying the CD will not, in any way, make Katy Perry more attracted to me.  THIS is obvious.  While I may be the best thing for her, she clearly doesn’t need my help.  Aside from the CD, she was Maxim’s #1 hottest female for 2010 — plus she has the support of people like me and @paolojackson — never mind the fact that a female with talent increases her hottness factor tenfold.

But I digress.  I have listened to the CD for the last 35 or so minutes and this is a solid pop CD.  Due to my proclivity for indie music, I sometimes get caught up in the depth and complexity of music.  This CD is not in the same league in the sense that many of the songs are catchy and has no pretentiousness or illusions of grandeur.  A sample lyric:

“I wanna see your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock, cock … Word on the street, you got somethin’ to show me, ee
Magical, colorful, Mr. Mystery, ee
I’m intrigued, for a peek, heard it’s fascinating
Come on baby let me see
What you’re hiding underneath”
- from “Peacock”

Based on my fascination with this woman and the competent (albeit tongue-in-cheek, lyrically) music, I give this album a Hell Yes, Please Lovehandle Me on a scale of Regrettably Lovesacked to Hell Yes, Please Lovehandle Me (with Likeyouasafriend being ‘average’).

If my mini-review leaves you skeptical, check out this article by ABC News (they do a much better job of articulating the feel of the CD).  On a side note, the proverbial icing on the cake, the CD case is scented like cotton candy.  Yep, this CD even smells like pop music and I appreciate her package even more.  In short, I loved her first album, and this one is proving to be a fun listen.  Long after the scent is gone from the Teenage Dream cover, at least I’ll have the liner notes to “appreciate.”

  1. Cotton Candy reminds me of the Mandy Moore song, which reminds me that you had the biggest crush on her senior year of high school into college.

It took me 10+ years, but I am beginning to realize a trend with your music taste…

    • Yeah, well Mandy Moore seems too goodie-goodie for me now. And well, Megan Fox is lacking a bit in “talent.” Zoey Deschanel is beautiful but is lacking that “umph” for me. Hence beauty, talent, and umph materializes in Katy Perry.

As far as my musical taste, it’s eclectic to say the least. But I can’t believe it took you 10+ years to figure that out.
